Educational Initiative
Mission
Unlike traditional youth community theaters, Tragoedia programs and classes are designed to explore socially relevant material. We believe that authentic learning experiences and artistic growth go hand in hand; we believe that life's most memorable moments emerge from ownership and mindfulness of engaging material. By utilizing theater as an avenue to insightful social critique, Tragoedia shapes our programming and rehearsal techniques around an educational curriculum. Novels and films are introduced to help examine characters and time periods more deeply, and original performance work is generated through specialized improvisational techniques.
Philosophy
Tragoedia does not take any specific political viewpoint on topics discussed in the course of rehearsal. Rather, we hope to inspire thoughtful, creative reflection on pressing social issues by generating a balanced, nonpartisan debate. Through specialized drama techniques, participants will learn to dissect relevant issues by reading, watching, and performing socially motivated, fictional works. Through a theatrical lens, we hope to approach these pieces from as many angles as possible and critically think about solutions to social issues.
Curriculum
Tragoedia's 2007 program curriculum included collaborative dramatic cast activities, rich dramaturgical research projects, and an educational trip to Coney Island, New York. To view the full cast and staff curriculum overview, click here.
